DAY 17 (03-10-23)

Q1. Consider the following statements :

  1. The Chromosphere is a layer in the Sun between about 400 km and 2100 km above the solar surface (the photosphere).
  2. The Convection Zoneis the deepest layer of the Sun that we can observe directly.
  3. The radiative zone is the second inner layer of the Sun.

Which of the statements given above are correct?

(a) 1 and 2 only

(b) 2 and 3 only

(c) 1 and 3 only

(d) 1, 2 and 3

Answer: (c)

Explanation:

Statement 1 is correct: The chromosphere is a layer in the Sun between about 400 km and 2100 km above the solar surface (the photosphere). The temperature in the chromosphere varies between about 4000 K at the bottom (the so-called temperature minimum) and 8000 K at the top.

Statement 2 is incorrect:The photosphere is the deepest layer of the Sun that we can observe directly. In Convection Zoneall of the hot material found near the center of the Sun rises cools down and drops back into the radiative zone to get more heat. This is the movement that creates sunspots and solar flares. This layer marks the border of what we usually refer to as the Sun.

Statement 3 is correct:The radiative zone is the second inner layer of the Sun. It sits outside of the core, and it holds its extremely high temperature. The zone itself has a temperature of around 7 million degrees Fahrenheit. This layer serves as a passage for all the energy that is released by the core. Photons travel through the radiative zone, and they can’t travel through long ranges of space, so it takes almost 50 million years for a photon to travel through this layer of the Sun.

Q2. Consider the following statements regarding National Commission for Scheduled Castes :

  1. It is a constitutional body under Article 338A.

(a) Shramana

(b) Parivraajaka

(c) Agrahaarika

Answer: (d)

  • Every king’s court had one Maagadha who was conversant with his royal master’s dynastic account and deeds. Maagadhas were what we know as “chroniclers” today. The Sutas used to gather from these Maagadhas the local itivritta or ‘history’. Should any Maagadha exaggerate anything about his master or hide some fault of his, the Suta would rectify that. It is because of this that the Sutas were known as satyavrataparayana. The Sutas knew the dynastic accounts of all kings.
